Shubman Gill will be the next big batter for India after Virat Kohli in ODI cricket. This is a claim even those who have played the game, the likes of Ravi Shastri, Irfan Pathan, and Wasim Jaffer have made. Gill’s transition from the junior to the senior level has been smooth and now that the Men in Blue will be looking to lift the coveted ODI World Cup- which will take place in India later this year- India may have found a dexterous opener alongside India skipper Rohit Sharma.

Eyes were raised when Rohit Sharma picked Gill over another destructive opener Ishan Kishan. Kishan banged his maiden double century last year and many wanted the Ranchi-based cricketer to open alongside Rohit.

On Sunday, Gill slammed a ton at Thiruvananthapuram’s Greenfield International Stadium. It was his second in the fifty-over format. While Virat Kohli stole the spotlight for his 74th international and 45th ODI ton, Gill also grabbed eyeballs.

Opening with Rohit, Gill scored 116 runs from 97 balls, including 14 fours and two sixes. India posted a mammoth 390/5 in 50 overs. Later, the bowlers wrapped it up quickly by restricting the visitors to just 73 runs as India whitewashed the series 3-0.

Gill has proved his worth by scoring 70 in the first match, and 116 in the final match. There is praise for this youngster and claim that he can be an all-format player for the team and the next poster boy of Indian cricket. If Virat Kohli is the ‘King’ of cricket then Shubman Gill is the ‘Prince’?

Shubman Gill first came into limelight when he won the Player of the Series in the ICC Men’s Under-19 ODI World Cup in 2018. He amassed 372 runs in five innings, slamming a ton and three fifties. Since his debut in ODIs, his maiden century came against Zimbabwe at Harare on August 22, 2022. The Punjab-born cricketer even surpassed Sachin Tendulkar by scoring the highest individual score against Zimbabwe in ODIs with his 130-run knock from 97 balls.

He is slowly developing and improving as a player. He has a good worth ethic despite tasting success and trains a lot to give his best whenever he is included in the XI. And the best thing is, he is always hungry for runs. He is scoring runs faster than Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in ODIs. He is the only batter in men’s ODIs from India to have an average of 55 and a strike rate of more than 100.

Since making his debut in ODIs in 2019, Gill has amassed 894 from just 18 matches with two hundred and five half-centuries at an average of 59.60 and he is just 23 years old right now. He has been consistently scoring runs for India. It’s not possible to include every player in the team and as consistency and skill matter a lot, Gill has proved that he is not a player to be missed. Fans on Twitter hailed Rohit’s decision to include Gill in the playing XI in the series against Sri Lanka.

In front of the big scores, one often forgets the crucial knocks a player has played for the team. Gill’s underrated 91 in the final Test against Australia in 2019 was one of those knocks. It helped India breach the fortress Gabba for the first time. Gill gave a solid start and was the high scorer for the team, but it got overshadowed in front of Rishabh Pant’s brilliant 89-run innings.

Gill even played a match-winning knock for the Gujarat Titans last year in the final against Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League. He opened for his team and steered them to the 131-run target, with valuable contributions from Hardik Pandya (34 off 30) and David Miller’s 19-ball 32-run quickfire as the Titans clinched the trophy in their maiden season.
