Shubman Gill had been facing criticism from fans and pundits for a long time. He was underperforming as an opener, but then was shifted to bat at number three. He averaged only 22.3 until he finally scored a century against England on 4th February in Vizag

Talking to the broadcaster JioCinema, Gill revealed that his father was in Vizag to watch the Test match. Fifteen balls after hitting his ton, he scored only four runs. In an attempt to score a boundary, he went to reverse sweep Shoaib Bashir, but instead gave a catch to Ben Foakes. Gill stated that he would most probably receive a scolding from his father, Lakhwinder Singh, for the shot.

The next day he was asked about what his father said, and Gill revealed that his father expected him to score more runs. He then said that more than his father, he was more disappointed with the way he played.

My dad said I missed out on a big one, I did kinda agree with him. I didn't tell about the heartbeat. More than anyone else, it was my own personal disappointment that I wasn't performing the way I wanted to perform.

This was Gill’s first 40+ in Tests since his century against Australia in 2023. He was told the Vizag Test was his do-or-die innings. It looks like he has retained his spot, but he will still need to prove to the coaches why he deserves to bat at number three.

Shubman Gill apologizes to Kevin Pietersen for not meeting him after sensational knock

While fans and former players spoke about dropping Shubman Gill due to his poor form, one player came to his defense. Former England star, Kevin Pietersen, kept backing the young star online, calling him a “serious player”. When the 24-year old finally scored his century, Pietersen wanted to meet him.
