Shubman Gill finally made his ODI World Cup debut against Pakistan. He missed the first two matches due to dengue, but recovered fast enough to return for India’s important match against Pakistan. Rohit Sharma had confirmed the day before to the press that Gill was 99% available.
He announced himself on his first delivery, as he drove Shaheen Afridi in between covers and mid-off for a boundary. He scored 12 more runs in the next 9 balls he played, which were all scored with boundaries. These boundaries were scored in Hasan Ali’s first over of the game.
Unfortunately the 24 year old was dismissed on his 11th ball by Shaheen Afridi. He went to cut the ball over point, but unfortunately the opener didn’t get enough elevation. Even though he hit the ball with good timing and power, he was caught by Shadab Khan.
Fans dazzled by Shubman Gill’s innings despite staying in the middle for only 11 balls
Even though Shubman Gill scored only 16 runs off 11 balls, three out of the four boundaries were some of the best shots played by him so far. His drives through the covers were all elegant and played with perfect timing.

Many fans gave the young star a break, choosing not to be angry at him for losing his wicket. As Gill was returning to cricket after being diagnosed with dengue, fans decided to not criticize him. Many fans were happy with what they saw and said they knew there was more to come in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup.
Despite losing Shubman Gill early, Rohit Sharma decided to go all out against the Pakistan bowling attack. He scored a half century in just 36 balls, hitting 3 boundaries and four maximums. Virat Kohli looked in good touch, but played an unusual shot to Haris Rauf that was caught at mid-on. Shreyas Iyer and Rohit Sharma are currently in the middle, with India requiring 91 runs in 36 overs.
