Shubman Gill departed for a duck in the second innings of the first Test against England in Hyderabad, which the visitors won. The management then had to give him an ultimatum that the second Test in Visakhapatnam would be his last to retain the No. 3 spot if he flops.
As per a report by The Indian Express, Gill was told by the management to play domestic cricket after the second Test to prepare himself for the third Test in Rajkot, to which Gill agreed. If he had not scored his century to shut down his critics, he would have landed in Mohali to play the Ranji Trophy match between Punjab and Gujarat on February 9.

In the Vizag Test, the 24-year-old then played a quickfire of a 46-ball 34 with five boundaries, before James Anderson put an end to his stay at the crease. In the second innings, no batters reached 50, but Gill scored his third Test century. From 147 balls, the Punjab-born batter scored 104 runs but became a victim of debutant Shoaib Bashir.
Anil Kumble blasted Shubman Gill after the first Test
The opportunities Shubman Gill has been getting despite his poor performances frustrated India great Anil Kumble. Kumble advocated for veteran Cheteshwar Pujara who did not get a single chance after the 2023 World Test Championship final.
He (Gill) has been given the cushion perhaps even Cheteshwar Pujara didn’t get, although he (Pujara) has played over 100 Tests. I keep coming back to him (Pujara) mainly because that was his place (No 3) not too long ago.Kumble had said on JioCinema after the first Test
Notably, Gill used to open for India, but he approached the management to be given the No. 3 spot.
