Simon Doull slams Virat Kohli’s dull batting on air, says RCB icon batted for personal milestone

Faf du Plessis-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) took on Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their third match at IPL 2023. LSG captain, KL Rahul won the toss and opted to bowl first. But his decision backfired a long time as RCB posted 212/2 in their designated 20 overs. All three of Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis, and Glenn Maxwell scored half-centuries.

While Maxwell and du Plessis joined the party late, Virat Kohli took charge from the ball go. His fortune also favoured the batter as a top edge against Avesh Khan flew over the wicketkeeper for a six. Kohli then gained confidence as well as control and raced to 42 runs in just 25 balls. However, the batter took ten balls to score the next eight runs and reach his half-century.

This change in approach from Kohli did not sit well with on-air commentator Simon Doull who criticized the former RCB skipper for slowing down. Doull claimed that Kohli intentionally slowed down, for his personal milestone.

“Kohli was concerned about a personal milestone. He took 10 balls to score eight runs. Started off like a train, took 10 balls from 42-50 runs,” said Doull on air.

Notably, this is not the first time Doull has criticized a batter for their approach in a T20 match. Recently, Doull had also called out Babar Azam for deliberately playing slow so that he can score a century.

RCB go big!

RCB batting

While Doull was quite critical of Kohli, the 34-year-old led the charge with the bat in the powerplay scoring 42 out of 56 runs. The former RCB captain also scripted history with his 44-ball 61 on Monday. By scoring a half-century against LSG, Kohli became the batter to score a half-century against every team to have featured in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Talking about RCB’s innings, apart from Kohli, du Plessis and Maxwell piled up the runs. While du Plessis remained unbeaten on 79, Maxwell got out after a 29-ball 59. Dinesh Karthik scored a solitary run. Meanwhile, for LSG, Mark Wood and Amit Mishra picked up a wicket each. While Mishra got Kohli caught at deep midwicket, Mark Wood cleaned up Maxwell in his last over.
