England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) league, The Hundred is underway. While there is no complaint about the level of cricket in the tournament, the reporting and presenting have not been the best. In fact, an incident with Southern Brave all-rounder Maitlan Brown has left fans cringing about the level of presentation.
The incident took place during a match between Trent Rockets and Southern Brave. As Southern Brave’s inning was underway, Maitlan Brown engaged in a chat with Chris Hughes, a former Long Island contestant. The chat itself started on a wrong note as Hughes called Brown a ‘Batsman’.
As the chat went on, the interviewer asked Brown about how have been the players getting along who replied that the players watched the infamous movie ‘Barbie’. “We watched Barbie the other night altogether and it was really good team bonding and the group is gelling really well together,” she said. “That is the key to success I think in tournaments like this, how well and how quickly you can gel as a group.”
It was then that Hughes made an absurd comment calling Brown a Barbie. Hughes quipped in response: “You’re a little Barbie yourself innit with your blue eyes”, prompting an awkward laugh from Brown.

As the video of this incident went viral on social media and fans called out the BBC for hiring someone just for the sake of demographics, the broadcasters came up with a statement. BBC revealed that Chris Hughes was warned about his comments. “We have spoken to Chris and explained that his comment was not appropriate,” said BBC’s spokesperson.
Coming to Maitlan Brown, the Australian all-rounder did not have the best of outings in her first match. While she was run out for 2 while batting, Brown conceded 41 runs in her 20 balls and could not claim any wicket. Nevertheless, her team won the match by 27 runs as Mary Taylor and Georgia Adams ripped through the Rockets’ batting lineup, claiming three and two wickets each.
Meanwhile, India’s star batter Smriti Mandhana had a good time out in the middle as she scored a 36-ball 55. Mandhana’s 65-run opening partnership with Dani Wyatt provided Brave a solid start and they eventually finished with 157/6.
