Babar Azam did not have the day he wanted while coming to bat against Sri Lanka on Tuesday (October 10) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Scoring just 10 runs from 15 balls while chasing a huge target of 345 runs, Babar failed to deliver under pressure on the trot, prompting social media fans to create funny memes to mock the Pakistan captain.

After the dismissal of opener Imam-ul-Haq, Babar came to bat but Dilshan Madushanka ensured Sri Lanka another quick wicket by dismissing him in the eighth over. During Pakistan’s first match against the Netherlands, Babar could contribute just five runs.

This year, Babar Azam played 18 matches and scored 760 runs with his highest being a 151-run knock. He also slammed two centuries and six half-centuries. His performance took him to the top spot of the ODI rankings. But these two lackluster performances in the World Cup are bound to attract criticism.

Fans make fun of Babar Azam for not playing clutch innings against Sri Lanka

Indian fans left no stone unturned while slamming Babar Azam. They compared him with Virat Kohli who recently played a clutch innings against Australia. Some fans pointed out that Babar unleashes attacks only against teams like Nepal and Zimbabwe, that are not considered favorites to win over strong teams let alone the World Cup.

Earlier in the match, after Sri Lanka opted to bat first, Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama hammered the Pakistani bowlers with their centuries. Mendis smashed the fastest century by a Sri Lankan batter in World Cups and got dismissed after scoring 122 runs from 77 balls. Samarawickrama added 108 runs from 89 balls.

Their centuries led Sri Lanka to a commanding total of 344/9 in their 50 overs. Hasan Ali, despite his four-fer, conceded 71 runs in 10 overs.
