Former India captain Sourav Ganguly who celebrated his 51st birthday on Saturday (8 July) shared his views on India’s chances at the 2023 ODI World Cup. As the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) gets ready to host the quadrennial showpiece event in October-November this year, Ganguly predicted the four semifinalists as well as talked about India’s chances.

The Prince of Kolkata said India, Australia, and England are the three certain finalists. For the fourth spot, Ganguly picked New Zealand and Pakistan while hoping for the latter to make it so that Eden Gardens can host the big semifinal between the two arch-rivals.

“It’s very hard to say. Australia, England, India. You can never underestimate New Zealand in these big matches. I will pick five, and include Pakistan also. Pakistan better qualify so that we will have the India-Pakistan semi-final at the Eden Gardens,” said Ganguly while talking to Revsportz

As Team India has failed to win an ICC title in the last ten years and has been consistently getting hammered in knockout matches with the latest disappointment coming in the 2023 WTC Final, Ganguly touched upon the topic. The former skipper saw the positive side saying making two consecutive finals is an achievement in itself. Ganguly is also hopeful about India’s chances this time around.

“Yes, yes, always hopeful. At least we qualified to the finals of the WTC, which is also an achievement. And yes, we have a chance. We have got good players, plenty of them. Hopefully, we will do it this time,” said the 51-year-old.

When asked if India fails because of pressure and if it will hamper India’s chances yet again, Ganguly denied the claim saying, “I don’t think pressure is an issue.” The former BCCI President also backed Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid to help Team India lift their third ODI World Cup.
