In 2021, Ravi Shastri’s contract ended after the 2021 T20 World Cup. The BCCI started scrambling for a new head coach, and ended up hiring former Indian captain, Rahul Dravid. Dravid then was the head coach of India A and the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Although he is the Indian head coach, he was reluctant and Sourav Ganguly needed to work hard to convince him.
Ganguly revealed to the press that when Shashtri had left, the BCCI and Ganguly tried their best to convince Dravid to join. He also stated how happy he was that Dravid agreed to extend his contract, as he was impressed with India’s dominant performance in the World Cup.
I'm not surprised that they have shown faith in Dravid. When I was president of the Board, we convinced him to do this job. And I'm so happy to see yesterday that his tenure has been extended.Sourav Ganguly
The former BCCI president believed India is close to winning an ICC tournament soon. Taking his example as captain, he said he failed to win 2 out of 3 tournaments. The one trophy he did win, he had to share it with Sri Lanka (2002 ICC Champions Trophy).
Sourav Ganguly says Rohit Sharma should continue as all-format captain
Sourav Ganguly believes Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, should continue as an all-format captain for India, especially for the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup. Along with that, he wants Virat Kohli to play in the World Cup.
He said the rest Sharma and Kohli are taking for the white-ball tours is deserved as there is a lot of cricket. He expects the two to feature in the upcoming T20 World Cup as they performed well in the 2023 ODI World Cup.
