Former India captain Sourav Ganguly who worked as the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for three years, has launched a scathing attack on the board’s selection committee for promoting Ajinkya Rahane as the Test vice-captain. Ganguly has questioned the rationale behind such a decision.

The former India skipper believes although Rahane is not totally unfit for the position, the BCCI Selection Committee must have looked at grooming someone to take up the role. Ganguly felt that handing vice-captaincy to someone who sat out of the team for 18 months before making a comeback was not a logical move.

“I won’t say it’s a step backward. You have been out for 18 months, then you play a Test and you become a vice-captain. I don’t understand the thought process behind it. There is Ravindra Jadeja, who has been there for a long time and is a certainty in Test matches, he is a candidate,” Ganguly was quoted saying by PTI.

“….but to just come back and straightway become vice-captain after 18 months, I don’t understand. My only thing is that the selection shouldn’t be hot and cold. There has to be continuity and consistency in selection,” he added.

Sourav Ganguly, who is counted among the best Test captains in the country, also gave away a couple of names who could have been named as India’s Test vice-captain. The former skipper believes one of Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja should have been given the responsibility.

“Yeah, I think so,” said Ganguly when he was asked if it would have been ideal to groom someone like Shubman Gill for the role. Former BCCI selector Saba Karim also echoed Ganguly’s thoughts as he said that Shubman Gill should have been the ideal candidate for this post.

“Or if not him (Ravindra Jadeja) then maybe Shubman Gill if the Indian selectors thought that he is the future. I am just saying, there are some candidates,” Karim told Sportskeeda.
