Former India captain and ex-BCCI Chief Sourav Ganguly is mightily impressed with Yashasvi Jaiswal and hence wants the young left-hander in India’s ODI World Cup squad. Although the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Selection Committee has indicated that Jaiswal is not in their scheme of things for the World Cup (by including him in the Asian Games squad), Ganguly wants Ajit Agarkar-led Selection Committee to rethink their decision.
Jaiswal has been included in the 15-member squad for the 2022 Asian Games scheduled to take place from 19 September to 8 October and hence remains out of contention for the ODI World Cup. The quadrennial showpiece event kicks off on 5 October while India play their first game on 8 October. Hence, the players traveling to China are considered to be out of BCCI’s scheme of things.
But Sourav Ganguly is not happy with this selection as the former India skipper wants Jaiswal in the World Cup squad. “I would like to see Jaiswal play in the upcoming ODI World Cup,” Ganguly said (via TOI).
“I have watched him from close quarters during the IPL. But red-ball cricket is different and he showed that he has it in him to succeed there too. I feel he has the quality to serve Indian cricket for a long time,” Ganguly added.
Sourav Ganguly suggests pulling Yashasvi Jaiswal out of Asian Games
The ex-BCCI Chief then put in a suggestion for the selectors saying they must pull Yashasvi Jaiswal out of Asian Games and include him in the WC squad. Ganguly said that having a left-hand batter at the top of the order will benefit India.
“I am always in favor of left-hand-right-hand combinations in the top order. That puts the rival attack under some trouble as the bowlers have to continuously vary their line and length accordingly,” he pointed out. “They should preferably pull Jaiswal out of the Asian Games side and consider him for the World Cup.”
Notably, Jaiswal impressed everyone with his 171-run knock against the West Indies in his debut Test. The youngster showed extreme composure throughout his stay. Ever since that knock, the call to include Jaiswal in the ODI World Cup squad has increased.
