Former India captain and former president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Sourav Ganguly questioned whether India are favorite in the 2023 ODI World Cup because they are the host country. India are hosting the ODI World Cup on its own for the first time in history. The iconic tournament is set to start on October 5 with a match between England and New Zealand.
Ganguly and former India opener Virender Sehwag were involved in a discussion on X (formerly Twitter). “Is #TeamIndia favorite because the World Cup is held in India or because we’re playing with strength and confidence @virendersehwag? Yes, we won against Aus in Aus, drew series against England but then we lost to them both in big match situations. I think we have a solid team and a big chance, but we do need to get back to our winning ways before the #ICCworldCup23,” Ganguly wrote.
The last time India hosted the tournament alongside Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in 2011, they lifted the trophy by beating Sri Lanka by six wickets in the final. Since then the country that hosted the World Cup went on to emerge victorious. The 2015 World Cup was held in Australia and they became champions by beating New Zealand in the final. In the 2019 edition in England, the host country crowned champions by beating New Zealand.
India will play their first World Cup match on October 8 against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Their clash against Pakistan is on October 14 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
