A few days before India was to face Pakistan in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup, the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced a special pre-match ceremony. The event had notable singers like Arijit Singh, Sukhwinder Singh and Shankar Mahadevan performing. Unfortunately, the performances were not telecasted by Star Sports.
Just an hour before the toss, Star Sports released a statement where they confirmed that the ceremony had been planned for the fans in the stadium and it was not televised. The ceremony started at 12:30 pm and was opened by Shankar Mahadevan.
Shankar Mahadevan sang ‘Breathless’ and ‘Suno gaur se duniya walo’, and was then followed by Sunidhi Chauhan. Crowd favorite Arjit Singh performed in front of the packed people, before Sukhwinder Singh finished the show.
Fans give polarizing reactions to the ceremony not being telecasted
Despite hyping up the pre-match show, Star Sports did not televise the show to their television and OTT audience. Only the fans inside the stadium were able to see the performances by the stars.
Fans were unhappy with Star for not broadcasting the performances, as many stated they were excited to watch the show, with many lashing out on Star and BCCI. On the other hands, many fans were happy they didn’t have to witness the show.
Many fans were bashing Jay Shah and BCCI, saying the organization does not care about the fans. Fans called out Jay Shah alone and blamed him for the entire ordeal. One fan also called cricket a circus, in which the BCCI is filled with clowns and the ringmaster was Jay Shah.
After winning the toss, India captain Rohit Sharma elected to bowl first. Mohammed Siraj picked up the wicket of Abdullah Shafique in the powerplay, which was then followed by the dismissal of Imam-ul-Haq by Hardik. Ravindra Jadeja also trapped Mohammad Rizwan in front of the stumps, but after a smart review Rizwan was declared not out.
