Ever since Jonny Bairstow’s bizarre dismissal in the 2nd Ashes Test, Alex Carey has been receiving backlash for deceiving the ‘spirit of cricket.’ Post that incident, England’s Sir Alastair Cook made a wild statement about Carey not paying for a haircut at Leeds. Now, Steve Smith took a subtle dig at Alastair Cook in his recent Instagram story for relaying such a rumor.

Cook’s story about Carey turned out to be not-so-true and the former apologized for his remarks but Alex Carey who was already in troubled waters with the media, received further backlash.

Steve Smith responded to Alastair Cook’s accusations about Alex Carey on Threads by writing that he’s witness to the fact that Carey hasn’t had a haircut ever since the team landed in London.

In response, Cook issued an apology stating it was a case of mistaken identity. He said “There’s also been a bit of fuss around on a rainy day, a bit of news about a haircut which might have been discussed on the radio the other day. A case of mistaken identity, so I apologize for the mistaken identity to Alex Carey.”

Steve Smith took to Instagram stories to post a selfie with Australian Wicket-Keeper Alex Carey which he captioned “Great Haircut” with a money emoji in the end indicating that Carey got a paid haircut, taking a dig at Cook. The story comes as a reply to Cook’s rumored haircut story about Alex Carey. The Aussie batter also shared a tweet where he confirmed that Carey paid for his haircut.

Steve Smith earlier came to Carey’s rescue on Threads and now posted an Instagram to further emphasize his stance ahead of the 4th Ashes Test. The Ashes are a goldmine of drama and there’s no denying that, it will be interesting to see what this story sparks between the teams in the upcoming Test.
