Former India captain and legendary opening batter Sunil Gavaskar has launched a scathing attack on Rohit Sharma and his Team India. The legendary cricketer who turned 74 on Monday (10 July) has raised several questions while talking about India’s performance in the past few months. Talking specifically about India’s defeat in the World Test Championship Final, Gavaskar slammed Rohit’s captaincy.
The former India skipper said he had high hopes from Sharma who took over India’s captaincy from Virat Kohli but Rohit failing to give results despite a good team at his disposal has left the 74-year-old disappointed.
“I expected more from him (Rohit). In India it is different, but when you do well overseas that is really the test. That is where he has been a little disappointing. Even in the T20 format, with all the experience of the IPL, hundreds of matches as captain, with a mix of best IPL players not being able to get to the finals has been disappointing,” said Gavaskar at Indian Express’ Idea Exchange.
Sunil Gavaskar slams Rohit Sharma over his lack of preparation excuse
India captain Rohit Sharma had rued lack of preparation after suffering a 209-run defeat at the hands of Australia. However, Sunil Gavaskar looked irked with this excuse and lambasted the Indian captain. The 74-year-old also asked Rohit what different they are doing after landing two weeks prior to the Test series against the West Indies.
“What kind of preparation are we talking about? Now they have gone to the West Indies. You have the example of the World Test Championship before you. Are you playing any matches? So what is this talk about 20-25 days?” asked Gavaskar.
The former India captain then accused senior players of taking their spots for granted. Sunil Gavaskar blamed it on senior players for not agreeing to go early to tours while also hitting at them for crying over workload. “The truth is the main guys do not want to go early. Because they know that come what may, they will get selected,” said Sunny G.
“And when you go early they will talk about the workload. You call yourself the fittest team in the world or fitter than the early generations then how do you break down so soon? How do you have a workload issue when you play a 20-over game?”
