Despite a century and a half-century from Virat Kohli and a century and two half-centuries from Rohit Sharma in the recently concluded Test series against the West Indies, Sunil Gavaskar feels the two batters should have not been included in the squad. The former India captain also accused the BCCI Selection Committee of protecting the two stalwarts by not including young players.

In his column for Mid-Day, Sunil Gavaskar criticized the BCCI Selectors for not giving younger players a chance. While Gavaskar lauded Kohli and Sharma for their batting performances, he asked if it helped the selectors learn anything new about these two already-established players.

“The runs scored by Rohit and Kohli against this West Indies attack begs the question what did the selectors learn that they didn’t know already? Wouldn’t it have been better to try out some youngsters and see how they take to Test cricket or is it that the selectors don’t want any sort of challenge from the younger lot to the established players?” wrote Gavaskar in his column.

The legendary cricketer then hoped to see a change in the approach to selections from the BCCI Selection Committee as Ajit Agarkar has taken charge as Chief Selector now. Sunil Gavaskar has bestowed his faith in the former India all-rounder to build a team for the future.

“Now that Ajit Agarkar has come on board as the Chairman of the selection committee let’s see if there is going to be any change in the approach to building a team for the future or if it’s going to be the same old story of the Indian team being the bridesmaid but not the bride,” wrote Gavaskar.

Notably, India recently lost to Australia in the World Test Championship Final by a massive 209 runs. This was their second defeat in the second consecutive WTC Final and hence it attracted a lot of flak. While the fans demanded an overhaul in the Test setup, the BCCI Selection Committee made Umesh Yadav and Cheteshwar Pujara the scapegoats.
