After England defeated India by 10 wickets in the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022, former India player Sunil Gavaskar predicted India’s future. He believes that India will undergo some major changes and also, and there will be some retirements. He says Hardik Pandya will be given more role as a leader.

He observed that as Pandya led Gujarat Titans to their first title in their maiden season, the selection committee has given a signal already by choosing Pandya as the captain for the New Zealand tour. It’s clear to Gavaskar that Pandya will be given the T20 captaincy.

For the tour of New Zealand, it’s a different team. The team is going there under Hardik Pandya. He will begin to put his stamp on the team because clearly the selection comittee has sent a signal that he, having won the IPL in his first assignment, as a captain, they have marked him out as captain for T20s. So I think with Pandya, it will be a completely different team,” Gavaskar told the broadcaster after the match.

There will some retirements also coming through, you never know. This is not the time to think about it. You really get away from it, give it a lot of thought but there are a lot of players in their mid-30s who would consider their position for the Indian T20 team,” he added.

During the post-match conference, India head coach Rahul Dravid was asked a question about senior players’ retirement to which he said that it’s too early to talk about such things just after the semi-final game.

It’s too early to talk about it, just after a semi-final game… These guys have been terrific performers for us. We’ve got a couple of years to reflect on it. These are some really quality players here. Not the right time to talk about or think about this stuff now. We’ll have enough time, enough matches as we go on ahead and try to prepare for the next World Cup.” said Dravid.

Coming to the match, India were asked to bat first, and they put on 168/6 following Virat Kohli‘s 50 and Hardik Pandya‘s 63. Indian bowlers just couldn’t break the partnership of English openers Jos Buttler and Alex Hales; both chased down the target with four overs to spare to knock India out of the T20 World Cup by 10 wickets.
