Sunil Gavaskar tears apart Virat Kohli for his rash shot in WTC Final, claims wanting to get to fifty made him play it

Former India captain and legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar is known to not mince his words while criticizing even the biggest of the names in Indian cricket. While he jumped in joy when Virat Kohli hit that six to Haris Rauf in the 2022 T20 World Cup, Gavaskar did not stop himself from thrashing the batter for his loose shot at a crucial juncture in the WTC Final against Australia.

As Kohli got out while trying to drive a wide delivery from Scott Boland when the batter was on 49, Gavaskar said the 34-year-old should be asked what made him play that shot.

“It was a bad shot. You should ask Kohli what shot he played. He talks so much about how to win a match you need a long innings. How are you going to do that if you play a ball so far outside the off stump?” said Gavaskar after India’s 209-run loss to Australia.

“It was a pretty ordinary shot. Outside the off stump. He was leaving till then. Maybe he was conscious that he needed one run to reach his half-century. It happens when you are nearing a milestone,” Gavaskar further stated.

Sunil Gavaskar feels landmarks played on Indian batters’ heads

The legendary cricketer also criticized Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ajinkya Rahane for their loose shots in the match. While Sunil Gavaskar was surprised at seeing Pujara playing a ramp shot, the former batter said Jadeja poking at a delivery from Nathan Lyon was a result of him trying to reach that 50-run landmark.

“The batting was in shambles today. It was just ridiculous what we saw today. Especially the shot-making. We saw some ordinary shots yesterday from Pujara, somebody you never expect to play that shot. Maybe somebody has gone into his head and said ‘strike rate, strike rate’,” The Indian Express quoted Gavaskar saying.

“He (Jadeja) played a delivery he shouldn’t have when he was 48. Happened to Ajinkya Rahane who was on 46. He hadn’t played that shot all this while. Suddenly why do you play that shot? Because you are aware of that landmark,” added Gavaskar.
