Former India captain Virat Kohli was going through a rough patch for more than three years, and it was only the last September that he whacked a century in international cricket since 2019. Now that he has returned to form, the discussion yet again started about when he can break Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI tons; and whether the 34-year-old can equal Tendulkar’s 100 international tons.

Since his T20I ton against Afghanistan in the 2022 Asia Cup, Kohli smashed three more centuries, all in the ODIs. Last year in an ODI against Bangladesh, he equaled Australia legend Ricky Ponting’s 72 international hundred. Then this year, he reached the three-digit mark two times, in the ODI series against Sri Lanka.

First, he played a 113-run knock in the first ODI against the Lankans, and in the third ODI, he scored his second-highest run with his 166*-run knock. This is also his 46th ODI century, and he is just behind Tendulkar who has clobbered 49th ton in the 50-over format. The legendary Sunil Gavaskar believes Kohli will equal Tendulkar’s record before this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL).

The form that he is in, the way that he is playing right now…now we have three matches against New Zealand and three more against Australia. So, we have six ODIs before IPL. And all he needs is three centuries. The way he is batting right now, why shouldn’t we feel that those three hundred happen before the IPL,” he said while speaking with Sports Tak.

Sunil Gavaskar also stated that if Virat Kohli plays till his 40s, he can break Sachin Tendulkar’s 100 international century record. Tendulkar kept his fitness and played till his 40s, and Gavaskar considers Kohli can also do the same as he is also conscious of his fitness.

In case he plays 5 or six years, he will get to the 100. There’s no doubt about it. His average is about 6-6 hundred a year. So if that happens, then surely he can add another 26 hundred in the next 5-6 years if he plays till 40,” Gavaskar added.

Meanwhile, Kohli was awarded the Player of the Series for his two tons against Sri Lanka. In the third ODI, India reached 390/5 courtesy of Kohli’s unbeaten 166 off just 97 balls which were decorated with 13 boundaries and eight maximums at a strike rate of 150.59. Mohammed Siraj bagged four wickets, and Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav scalped two each to restrict Dasun Shanaka & Co. to just 73 to win the match by a record-breaking 317 runs.
