India middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav blasted two half-centuries on the trot against Australia in the recently concluded three-match ODI series. Former India opener Virender Sehwag gave his verdict regarding the No. 4 position in the batting line-up and opined that Surya is yet to prove his value for the team in ODIs which can make him miss matches because other players, like Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul have already proved what they can do in the middle orders consistently.

Sehwag wants Suryakumar Yadav to score centuries in ODI to make it a headache for the selectors to squeeze him into the batting line-up in ODIs. The 2011 ODI World Cup winner believes that if Suryakumar plays in the World Cup, then he should be sent as a finisher.

But at the same time, he pointed out that at the No.6 position, Hardik Pandya comes to bat and it’s tough to drop him from the playing XI, given that he has also an important role to play as an all-rounder. Sehwag opined that after Shreyas Iyer’s 105-run knock against Australia, he confirmed his spot as a No.4 batter and that Rahul fits well as a No.5 batter, and Hardik as a No.6 batter.

Suryakumar Yadav hasn’t done anything big yet in ODI cricket. He only bats in those final 15-20 overs where he utilizes his T20 abilities which undoubtedly is important as well. But Hardik, Ishan, and Rahul can all do that same job as well. So Iyer is confirmed for No.4. Suryakumar will have to wait and if he does get a chance at No.4 he has to score a big hundred and show that he can also score a ton as well,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.
