India batter Suryakumar Yadav finally broke his silence about his flop shows in the ODIs after finally producing a match-winning knock in the third T20I against West Indies at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Tuesday (August 8). After India’s win, Suryakumar was quizzed about his ODI numbers and he said he feels no shame in admitting that his numbers in the fifty-over format are not impressive.

Since making his ODI debut in 2021 against Sri Lanka, Suryakumar went on play 26 of the 50-over format matches, scoring just 511 runs with the highest score of 64. He averages just 24.33 in this format.

When he was at the height of his career (in T20Is only), surprisingly, he was sent to packing three consecutive times for a duck. This made him the sixth batter in the format to record such numbers.

To be honest, my one-day numbers are absolutely bad and there’s no shame in admitting that,” Suyakumar said at the post-match press conference. “We all talk about honesty and you have to be, but how you can improve is more important.”

Speaking of the match, West Indies won the toss and chose to bat first. With the help of opener Brandon King‘s 42 off 42 and Rovman Powell’s flurry innings of an unbeaten 40 off 19, West Indies scored 159/5 in 20 overs.

After the failures of the openers who were sent packing for mere single runs, Suryakumar Yadav turned his vintage mode on to play a stormy innings of 83 runs from 44 balls with 10 fours and four maximums at a strike rate of 188.64. Along with him, Tilak Varma contributed an unbeaten 49 runs from 37 balls, helping India win the match by seven wickets.

Winning this match means the Men in Blue have saved themselves from a series defeat as West Indies were leading by 2-0. India will try to win the fourth Test to level the five-match series. The fourth match will be played on Saturday (August 12) in Florida.
