India’s most in-form batter Suryakumar Yadav slammed a ton for India with his 110* against Sri Lanka in the third and last T20I on Saturday (January 7) at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium. Surya’s unorthodox biggies steered India to a huge total of 228/5. Apart from him, Shubman Gill scored 46, while Axar Patel remained not out on 21.
Suryakumar became the fifth batter to smash three or more centuries in T20Is. Before him, Rohit Sharma (4), Glenn Maxwell (3), Colin Munro (3), and Sabawoon Davzi (3) had reached that mark.
Suryakumar became the only second Indian batter to score more than two centuries in the shortest format of the game with his unbeaten 110 from 51 balls, studded with seven fours and nine sixes. He crossed teammate KL Rahul who has two tons in T20Is. But the Indian player with more number of T20I centuries is Rohit Sharma who has four tons to his name.
Previously, Surya scored his first hundred (117) against England in July 2022, and his second century came against New Zealand in November 2022. He is also the second-quickest Indian to reach the three-digit mark, from just 45 balls. He is again, only behind Rohit who took just 35 balls to score his ton and the former is followed by KL Rahul (from 46 balls).
Talking about the match, India’s stand-in skipper Hardik Pandya won the toss and decided to bat first. Ishan Kishan and Gill opened the innings. Kishan became Dilshan Madhushanka’s victim in the over itself, as he walked out for one run. But Rahul Tripathi (35 from just 16 balls) was included in the playing XI and he and Shubman Gill (46) stitched a partnership to stabilize the innings.
Suryakumar’s knock and Axar Patel’s cameo of 21* from nine balls drove India to 228/5. At the time of writing this article, Sri Lanka have already lost half of their batters for 99 runs. Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka and Wanindu Hasaranga are at the crease playing at 19* and 5* respectively. If India win the match, they’ll also win the series by 2-1.
