India’s hero in the Sydney Test alongside Ravichandran Ashwin in the 2020-21 Border Gavaskar trophy, Hanuma Vihari has not been given a chance in the Test side since July 2022, marking a year since he donned the whites for Team India.
He has been overlooked by the management for a spot in the side for a long time now. He was not a part of India’s squad for the WTC Final either and did not make it to the Test squad for India’s tour of the West Indies.
With a big name like Cheteshwar Pujara being dropped from the mix, and young players like Yashasvi Jaiswal going through, it is evident that the BCCI is looking to move on and build a team for the future. While the 29-year-old Vihari still has at least 4-5 years of cricket left in him, his place in the side hangs in the balance.
Hanuma Vihari was not contacted after being dropped
Hanuma Vihari expressed his disappointment in an interview with The Indian Express. On his exclusion from the Test side, Vihari said that he could not find a reason for being dropped and that no one ever contacted him to inform him why he was dropped in the first place. He said, “Definitely, there was disappointment. I didn’t find a reason why I was dropped and it was the only thing that was bothering me. Nobody really contacted me and told me the reasons why I was dropped.”
However, the middle-order batter is currently playing in the Duleep Trophy and has ‘moved on’ from the situation. He said, “It took some time and I have gone through ups and downs and I’m not worried about it now. I’ve put aside my personal side of things and I don’t take too much stress about whether I’m in the Indian team or not. There are other matches to win and it is about winning the trophies.”
While Hanuma Vihari continues to have a decent career in domestic cricket, his place in the Indian Test side remains uncertain. It will be interesting to see whether he gets a chance moving ahead in the 2023-25 WTC Cycle.
