With T20 World Cup around the corner – defending champions Australia have already suffered a blow as their backup wicketkeeper Josh Inglis was ruled out of the tournament. The 27-year-old Aussie suffered a freak injury while he was playing golf ahead of the competition.

While swiping at the ball during a social round on Wednesday at a Sydney course, Inglis cut his right hand with the shaft of his club and he was taken to the hospital following the injury.

Inglis won’t be participating in the cricketing extravaganza, where Australia will be starting its title campaign against their neighbouring country New Zealand on Saturday.

Cricket Australia have still not named Josh Inglis replacement

“We have got a bit of a problem to solve this morning around our backup ‘keeper and also a backup batter,” McDonald told SEN radio.

“We have got to work out what a squad would like going into a World Cup without a backup keeper and the scenario if Matthew Wade were to get injured on the morning of a game. What would you do there if you didn’t have a resource in the group that was a stand-out ‘keeper?.”

However, Cricket Australia has still not named the replacement. Cameron Green’s name is doing the rounds, but the likes of Alex Carey, Ben McDermott, Josh Philippe, and Nathan Ellis are also in contention to replace the injured Josh Inglis.

However, McDonald also added that the replacement player would not be making it to the playing XI straight away unless there is another injury.

“Does it create a headache if we being him in? No, it probably just gives us more options,” he told reporters at the SCG. “If Cameron Green was considered in the starting XI before the tournament started then he would have been in the 15 and he’s not, so if he was to come in there’s no way, unless there’s another injury, that he would come into the starting XI.”
