Australia Women’s captain Meg Lanning is set to lead the Delhi Capitlas (DC) in the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL), starting March 4 in Mumbai. Lanning will be taking up this assignment right after leading the national team to the title at the Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa, where they defeated the host to get crowned T20 World Champions for the record sixth time. India batter Jemimah Rodrigues will be Lanning’s deputy for the Capitals.
“It’s a very proud moment for me, firstly to be involved with Delhi Capitals and then to lead them. It’s about enjoying yourself, getting the best out of yourself,” Lanning, who was roped in for $133,000 in the player auction, said after her appointment as DC’s skipper.
“WPL is a massive moment for the sport, it’s a logical step and makes a lot more sense. Cricket in India is people’s lives and the feat that WPL is up and running, and to be involved in something like this, is amazing. It’s only going to grow in the coming years,” she added. Delhi Capitals were the last team to name their captain.
Lanning is the most successful captain in Women’s cricket, as she led her team to a record four T20 World Cups. The 30-year-old has played 132 T20Is, scoring 3405 runs, including two centuries and 15 half-centuries at an average of 36.61 and a strike rate of 116.37.
She has also led the national side in 100 matches- the most by any woman in the shortest format. She has played six Tests and 103 ODIs, scoring 345, and 4601 runs respectively.
Meg Lanning became the third Australian to lead a WPL side
In a tournament with five teams, Lanning became the third Australian player to lead a side. Gujarat Giants have chosen Australia’s star opener, Beth Mooney, while UP Warriorz made Alyssa Healy their leader.
Apart from these three, the other two teams will be led by Indian players. India captain Harmanpreet Kaur and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana will be leading Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore respectively.
Lanning also led Melbourne Stars in the Women’s Big Bash League but so far has not won a trophy. She is also a part of Trent Rockets in The Hundred.
Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals will open their campaign against RCB on March 5 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
