Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni never looks out of touch when it comes to wicketkeeping and decision-making. However, the former India captain used to struggle with the bat in his hand in the last three seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Dhoni managed 200, 114, and 232 runs in IPL 2020, IPL 2021, and IPL 2022 respectively. Not the runs but the rate at which they came were concerning.

Nevertheless, the tide has turned now. Dhoni is striking at 204.26 in IPL 2023. In 11 matches played so far, Dhoni has scored 96 runs at an average of 48. The CSK captain is hitting the ball out of the park at will. He looks unfazed by any kind of bowling. The same continued in his team’s game against Delhi Capitals.

Dhoni walked out to bat at No. 8 as Chennai lost wickets in quick succession. He thwarted Khaleel Ahmed for a six towards deep midwicket and cleared his intentions. Dhoni managed a boundary through an outside edge and then hit another maximum straight down the ground before getting caught at long-on in the last over. The CSK captain went back with a 9-ball 20 to his name.

Later, when asked in the post-match presentation about his cameos this year, Dhoni said that that is his job this season. “This is what my job is, I have told them this is what I am supposed to do, don’t make me run a lot and it has been working. This is what I need to do, happy to contribute,” Dhoni told Murali Karthik.

CSK already preparing for knockouts

Chennai Super Kings are all but qualified for the playoffs and MS Dhoni is also aware of it. So, when he was asked about the CSK middle order stepping up towards the business end, Dhoni said that he is happy that the likes of Moeen Ali and Ravindra Jadeja are getting enough games before the knockout stage kicks off.

“The good thing is Moeen and Jaddu got a chance to bat. As we get closer to the last phase of the tournament, it’s important that everybody has a few deliveries under their belt. We need to be happy with our batting,” said the CSK captain.
