“The game has moved on from that style of cricket,” Tom Moody criticizes Virat Kohli for his conservative approach against Delhi Capitals

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batter Virat Kohli was the centre of criticism for his sluggish knock against Delhi Capitals on Saturday. As Kohli scored a 46-ball 55 and RCB lost the match by six wickets, the former RCB skipper received a lot of backlash for his conservative approach while batting. Kohli was also held accountable for RCB’s loss to an extent.

Amid all these criticisms came an apt analysis of Kohli’s knock from former Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) coach Tom Moody. The former Australian decoded Kohli’s thought process during the knock and also shared his opinions on the same. Moody said that while the former RCB skipper has always played his cricket with the same approach, it might be outdated in this form of the game.

“Will always have this debate because it is the Virat Kohli template. It’s the way he bats. His career strike rate is around 130. His ability to continue to churn out runs is quite extraordinary,” said Moody on ESPNCricinfo.

“But maybe he also felt that whilst the other end was flying along, his role was to feed that other end. But in my view, particularly with the impact player, the game has really moved on from that style of cricket. That’s why we are seeing so many totals go to 200+. There is no such role. We all need to be going here at 150+ without a doubt because we have the comfort of depth,” he added.

Was Delhi pitch tough to bat on?

As RCB won the toss and decided to bat first, Faf du Plessis reckoned the pitch will get slower and there won’t be a dew factor and hence the decision. However, it seemed otherwise. The wicket was a tad slow at the start but started to get better to bat on as the game progressed. The Delhi batters finding boundaries with ease was surely a testimony to that.

Virat Kohli’s approach, meanwhile, was certainly questionable as Mahipal Lomror too was finding boundaries with ease. Moody also talked about that and said that had Kohli too played with the same intent, RCB would have gotten a few more runs.

But did they get as many as they could have? If he took his foot a little off the brake and went with Lomror, and tried to target a boundary an over himself, we will never know,” Moody said.
