Thousands of protesters have swarmed the Sri Lankan President’s official residence in Colombo because of an unprecedented and worst economic crisis since Independence. Sri Lanka’s former captain Kumar Sangakkara has come out in support of the protesters tweeting a video clip with the message: “This is for our future”.

In the video, thousands of protesters could be seen waving the Lankans flags and listening to someone addressing them through a loudspeaker.

Sri Lankan people are demanding the resignation of the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa for many months now and stormed his residence when he refused to comply.

“Throw out a failed Leader”- Sanath Jayasuriya

Former Sri Lankan cricketer and World Cup winner Sanath Jayasuriya also showed his support by calling the President a “failed leader”.

“In my entire life I have never seen the country United like this with one goal to throw out a failed Leader. The writing is now on YOUR official house WALL. Please go in peace,” Sanath Jayasuriya tweeted with the hashtag #GoHomeGota today!”

Jayasuriya has been the most vocal among the Lankan cricketers. During his meeting with the Commissioner Gopal Baglay, he had appreciated India’s support in the form of essential supplies. He had also lauded “big brother” India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for sending help.

Another former Sri Lankan captain and batting legend Mahela Jayawardene also wrote on his Twitter: “We as a country has changed direction and nothing can change that…people have spoken!!” with the hashtag #GoHomeGota #peoplepower.
