Mumbai Indians’ batter Tilak Varma rose to fame in IPL 2022 when the left-handed batter bailed MI out of trouble on several instances in a forgettable season. The young batter top-scored for MI with 397 runs in 14 matches. Varma scored two crucial half-centuries. But it was just a trailer of what was coming everyone’s way. Tilak Varma got even better in IPL 2023 as he scored heaps of runs and that too at a quick rate. While Varma struck at 131.02 in his debut season, the southpaw maintained a strike rate of 160+ in the following edition. But Varma was not born with a silver spoon.

Coming from a humble background in Hyderabad, Telangana, Varma was born on November 8, 2002. The young left-handed batsman made his debut in Ranji’s trophy for Hyderabad versus Andhra three seasons back. He is a middle-order batsman and can occasionally bowl off-spin too.  He was a part of the u19 World Cup squad in 2020 when the team lost the finals to Bangladesh. He scored 86 runs in six games with an average of 28.86.

Varma had an extraordinary domestic season of 2021/22 scoring 180 runs, the most number of runs for Hyderabad in five matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. In the Ranji Trophy as well, he scored 216 runs in six innings and was his team’s best batsman. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he scored a total of 215 runs in the seven matches he played with an impressive strike rate of 147.26. The most successful IPL franchise bought Tilak Varma for INR 1.7 crores in the 2022 IPL Mega Auction.
