“Nobody saw this coming”- Twitter errupts as Jasprit Bumrah creates world record; smashes 29 runs in an over off Stuart Broad

Jasprit Bumrah and Stuart Broad

India pacer Jasprit Bumrah was in beast mode in his first match as a captain; unleashed a carnage against Stuart Broad on Day 2, on Saturday July 2 at Edgbaston, in Birmingham. This is the rescheduled fifth Test match against England.

In the 84th over, Bumrah went all against Broad and smashed as many shots to all corners of Edgbaston. All fans could remember is the inaugural 2007 T20 World Cup where former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh had made a world record by hitting six sixes in an over off Stuart Broad’s deliveries and scored 36 runs there.

When Stuart Broad bowled the first ball, a top edge off Bumrah’s bat sent it to the boundary. Broad’s next ball was a bouncer, was too short and went over wicket-keeper Sam Billings‘ head. The third ball was a no ball but Bumrah smashed it for a six anyway. Then the 28-year-old released three back to back fours. The fifth ball was a clean hit by Bumrah and he finished the over with a quick single.

So the impressive over read: 4 Wds N6 4 4 4 6 1

Stuart Broad concedes most runs in an over in Test cricket

29 runs came off Jasprit Bumrah’s bat while five runs were counted as extras. Now, Broad has the unwanted record of conceding most runs in an over in Test cricket’s history (35 runs). He also has the world record of conceding most runs in T20 match in an over (36 against Yuvraj Singh).

What interesting thing happened is the fact that Bumrah broke a world record of the West Indies’ legendary Brian Lara. Lara had smashed 28 runs in an over, a record that stayed with him for 18 years.

Lara’s record came against South Africa in the Test match in 2003-04. It was spinner Robin Peterson’s over and Lara smashed four fours and two sixes off six legal deliveries. Also, former Australian plyer George Bailey had also scored 28 runs in an over. But he was behind Lara in terms of boundary count.
