The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the third and fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. Although nothing much was changed in the squad, a major difference was spotted in KL Rahul‘s designation.

Rahul, despite being given constant chances showed no signs of return. After a series of poor performances, the BCCI did not add the tag of vice-captain after his name.

Although the BCCI is yet to make an official announcement regarding the same, the squad has left the fans scratching their heads. They have reacted a great deal on this on Twitter.

KL Rahul always becomes the talk of the town after his poor show with the bat. He scored 22, 23, 10, 2, 29, 17, and 1, in his last seven innings. The management still granted him several opportunities despite constant failures.

But since the tag of vice-captain is missing after Rahul’s name, then it will also mean the Karnataka-born batter will no longer be an indispensable part of the playing XI. It can give the young Shubman Gill, who is enjoying the form of his life, a place in the XI.

Recent reports claim the BCCI has given the power to Rohit Sharma to appoint his deputy in Test cricket. “It was decided not to name any vice-captain. Instead, the power was given to Rohit Sharma. Who will lead the side in case he has to leave the field in Rohit Sharma’s call,” a source said as quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

After the second Test, Rohit and head coach Rahul Dravid were asked about KL Rahul. Both backed the out-of-form player, but at the same time, they acknowledged that Rahul has to learn how to play on spin-friendly surfaces.

For us, as team management, we always look at potential of any individual, not just KL. I was asked in the past about a lot of players. If a guy has potential, he will get an extended run,” Rohit said during the press conference on Sunday.
