“Only rain can save us now”- Twitter erupts as India implode on Day 2 in Indore after spin maestro Nathan Lyon turns wrecker-in-chief
With 112 wickets, and surpassing Anil Kumble's 111, Lyon now became the leading wicket-taker in Border-Gavaskar Trophy history.
Nathan Lyon
On a pitch that is keeping it low, Australia great Nathan Lyon did not miss a chance to turn into a wrecker-in-chief to run through India’s batting lineup on Thursday (March 2). India are in a miserable condition right now, because Lyon did not allow the hosts to settle for a longer time at the Holkar Stadium in Indore with his eight-wicket haul.
Fans were thinking they will see the same result as that of the first two Tests, where the Indian spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja will demolish the visitors’ batting line-up. But contrasting stuff was witnessed. Now, it looks India won’t recover from the damage. With three days left, will can India generate something extraordinary to defend a mere 76 runs?
After Matthew Kuhnemann wreaked havoc in India’s first innings with his maiden five-wicket haul, their second innings saw Lyon’s masterclass. He started first by sending Shubman Gill into packing, then sent skipper Rohit Sharma back to the pavilion for the ninth time, off lbw.

After Virat Kohli’s wicket by Matthew Kuhnemann, nothing much happened for a while. Cheteshwar Pujara at one end was slowly contributing runs. Lyon dismissed his first partner Ravindra Jadeja off lbw, then quickly got rid of Srikar Bharat as well.
Ravichandran Ashwin was disappointed after Australia’s review where Ball Tracking showed the three reds in Lyon’s over. But Lyon’s most important scalp was India’s wall- Cheteshwar Pujara. Pujara was the only one who showed how to bat despite other batter’s difficulty in front of the spin. For the 13th time, Lyon got the wicket of Pujara in Tests.
Pujara completed his 35th half-century, but Smith’s low one-handed stunner sent him back. Aussies needed to produce special efforts to get rid of Pujara, and Smith did it. In that same over, Lyon dismissed Umesh Yadav as well. Umesh is someone who comes to the crease and starts going for biggies. He did the same this time, but Cameron Green at deep mid-wicket did no mistake while grabbing the catch.
One wicket was all Australia needed right now to bundle out the host. India have scored 163 at the time of writing this article and has taken a 75-run lead. When Axar Patel was at the crease, India were still expecting to take a 100-run lead. But Lyon did not allow the all-rounder to play his shots because Mohammed Siraj gave away his wicket to him. With 112 wickets, and surpassing Anil Kumble‘s 111, Lyon now became the leading wicket-taker in Border-Gavaskar Trophy history.
