New Zealand under the leadership of Kane Williamson were the runners-up in the 2019 ODI World Cup. He was also the vice-captain during the 2015 World Cup where the team lost the final to Australia. But to a great blow to the Kiwis, Williamson is likely to miss the ODI World Cup this year, which is set to take place in India in October-November.
Williamson was signed by the Gujarat Titans for this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL). During Gujarat’s first match of this season against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Williamson jumped high to save a six from Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Though he was successful in doing that, he fell to the ground with a thud and was seen in great pain. He clasped his knees after falling and was subsequently taken out of the field and did not appear for the rest of the game. Later it was announced that Williamson has been ruled out of IPL 2023. As Williamson won’t be a part of the defending champions’ squad, Gujarat Titans have signed in Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka for the rest of the IPL in Williamson’s place.
After the scan result on Tuesday, it was confirmed that Williamson has injured his anterior cruciate ligament. Now recent reports say the 32-year-old will undergo surgery and as the rehabilitation will take time, he can miss the most important tournament of the year.

Williamson has played 161 ODIs and amassed 6554 runs at an average of 47.83, with the highest being 148. After the injury, he said he will do anything to get back on the field after the surgery.
“I’ve received great support over the past few days and want to thank both the Gujarat Titans and New Zealand Cricket for that,” Williamson was quoted as saying by New Zealand Cricket Association.
“Naturally it’s disappointing to get such an injury, but my focus now is on having the surgery and starting rehab. It’s going to take some time, but I’ll be doing everything I can to get back on the field as soon as possible. I look forward to going what I can support Gary [Stead] and the team over the next few months,” he added.
In case you missed!
