The Royal Challengers Bangalore finally managed to win a game in this inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League. They defeated UP Warriorz by five wickets with the help of brilliant knocks from Kanika Ahuja and Richa Ghosh on Wednesday (March 15) at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
Chasing the 136-run knock, Sophie Devine gave RCB a quick start with her two fours and one six in the first over itself but couldn’t score further than that because Grace Harris drew the first blood by dismissing her on the sixth ball to have a last laugh. Devine departed after her six-ball 14 runs.
Star RCB opener Smriti Mandhana‘s poor form continued this season as she fell for a duck off Deepti Sharma‘s delivery in the second over. Even Ellyse Perry couldn’t do much for the team because Devika Vaidya got rid of this dangerous fish with a catch by Sophie Ecclestone. Perry scored 10 off 13 balls.
Heather Knight tried to rescue the team with her 21-ball 24-run knock, which also included five boundaries but Deepti once again stuck, in the ninth over to send her into packing. Then Kanika Ahuja and Richa Ghosh took the responsibilities on their shoulders to drive the score past the target.
Both of them played brilliantly, though a slow knock. But looking at the situation and pressure, they were certainly worthy knocks. Kanika Ahuja slammed eight fours and a six and batted at a strike rate of 153.33 to score 46 runs from 30 balls.
It was Sophie Ecclestone who broke the stand between Ahuja and Ghosh by dismissing the former in the 17th over. Ecclestone bowled it fully, which Ahuja missed and the ball ended up smacking the bails. RCB needed 16 runs from 20 balls and Ghosh was still at the crease.
Her knock was enough to guide RCB to their first victory this season after losing five matches on the trot. Ghosh remained unbeaten with 31 runs from 32 balls, which also included three fours and a six. RCB won the match by five wickets with 12 balls remaining.
