Although Kolkata Knight Riders‘ (KKR) batting department did not produce an impressive performance against Mumbai Indians (MI), one man, who single-handedly destroyed the opponent’s bowler was Venkatesh Iyer. Iyer slammed his first century of this season on Sunday (April 16) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

The special thing about this knock is that it has taken 15 years for a KKR batter to score a ton. The legendary Brendon McCullum, who is also the first batter to reach the three-figure mark for the first time in the Indian Premier League (IPL), was KKR’s first batter who scored a ton. Since then, nobody from the side reached the feat.

After winning the toss, Mumbai Indians’ stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav elected to field first. The hosts got the upper hand in the Powerplay as they sent both the openers to the dugout. While Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored eight runs, Narayan Jagadeesan was sent into packing for a duck.

Later, KKR skipper Nitish Rana and later Shardul Thakur followed the openers to the dugout. Despite the wickets, KKR were still in a decent position as Venkatesh Iyer at one end did not let KKR’s quick run-flow stop.

To the dismay of the Wankhede fans, Ventakesh Iyer smashed nine sixes and six boundaries to score 104 runs from just 51 balls. The best thing about his knock was the strike rate which was a massive 203.92. He reached his century off just 49 balls.

Before he could do more for the team to drive them past the 200-run mark, he became a victim of Riley Meredith’s full-toss delivery off a catch by Duan Jansen. Later, Rinku Singh (18 off 18) and Andre Russell (21* off 11) took the team to 185/6 in their 20 overs. If Mumbai fail to chase down the target, it will be their third defeat in the season.
