Rest of India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has been in scintillating form since the start of the 2022-203 domestic season, achieved a special milestone on Saturday (March 4) during an Irani Cup match between the Rest of India and Madhya Pradesh in Gwalior.

On his debut, he slammed a double century (213 off 259 balls) in the first innings, then went on to smash a century off 104 balls in the second one. The 21-year-old stayed glued to the crease despite not getting enough support from another end.

The Madhya Pradesh pacers scalped four wickets on Day 4, but this did not stop the Mumbai batter from producing a remarkable performance. His double century also made him the youngest batter to reach that mark in the history of the tournament.

I am extremely excited to play at this level, of course. I never imagined that I was going to do this and I am really proud of myself. I am really happy,” Jaiswal was quoted as saying in a video on the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Domestic YouTube channel after scoring his double century.

Yashasvi Jaiswal had also played a brilliant knock of 227 on his Duleep Trophy debut in Chennai for West Zone against North East Zone, then played a scintillating knock of 146 on his India A debut against Bangladesh at Cox’ Bazaar in November 2022. In his 17 first-class innings, Jaiswal has accumulated over 1,000 runs this season, becoming the joint-fastest cricketer to reach 1000 runs in first-class cricket (in 13 matches), equalling Amol Muzumdar and Rusi Modi’s record.

At the same time, he became the highest run-getter in a single Irani Cup edition, surpassing Dhawan’s tally of 332 runs, which he scored during the 2012-13 edition. After Sarfaraz Khan, Jaiswal is another player from Mumbai who has been knocking on the doors of the selectors with his red-hot form.

Jaiswal became the only second batter after Shikhar Dhawan to amass over 300 runs in an Irani Cup match. Jaiswal is also the 11th Indian to reach a first-class double century and century in the same match.

KS Duleepsinhji first achieved this feat in 1929 for the Sussex in the County Championship in first-class cricket, while Sunil Gavaskar is the only Indian to slam a double century and century in the two innings of a match in international cricket.
