Former India captain Virat Kohli reached another milestone when he became the fastest cricketer to reach 25,000 runs in international cricket and in doing so, he broke the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s record. Kohli achieved the feat on Day 3, of the second Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series on Sunday (February 19) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

The Master Blaster took 577 matches to reach the landmark, while the Chase Master did the same in 549 matches. Tendulkar is followed by Ricky Ponting (588), Jacques Kallis (594), Kumar Sangakkara (608), and Mahela Jayawardene (701).

Kohli needed only 52 runs in the second Test match to script the world record. He walked to bat when the openers, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, exited the field after getting dismissed. Rohit played a quick knock of 31 runs off 20 balls, but Rahul added one more failure to his name when he departed for one run.

Kohli’s innings was also short-lived but it was enough of a contribution while chasing a paltry target of 114 runs. With three boundaries, Kohli quickly scored 20 runs off 31 balls, before keeper Alex Carey stumped him off a Todd Murphy ball. Later, KS Bharat (23*) and Cheteshwar Pujara (31), who was playing his 100th Test, remained unbeaten, taking India past the target comfortably.

Kohli scored just 12 runs off 26 balls in the first Test in Nagpur, where India crushed the visitors by an innings and 132 runs. In the first innings of the second Test, the run machine would have scored his half-century but got involved in a controversial dismissal by the third umpire.

Kohli, at an average of 48.78, has amassed over 8194 runs in Test cricket in 106 Test matches for India. In total, the talismanic batsman has smashed 27 centuries and 28 half-centuries for India in the longest format. He made his Test debut against West Indies at Sabina Park in 2011.

Meanwhile, India hammered Pat Cummins’ men by six wickets and retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Ravindra Jadeja was the star of the match after his seven-wicket haul, wrapping Australia’s second innings in the first session of Day 3. The World No.1 all-rounder is certainly one of the most valuable players in Test cricket; he won the Player of the Match award in both the Tests. The third Test will be played in Dharamshala from March 1.
