Australia made a terrific return in the T20 World Cup 2022 after a humiliating 89-run loss against New Zealand. On Tuesday [October 25], Aussie batter Marcus Stoinis’ absolute carnage snatched victory from Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka at the Optus Stadium in Perth. Stoinis smashed the fastest half-century in this year’s mega event but along with this special knock, he joined Yuvraj Singh in an elite list.
Sri Lanka posted 157/6 with a cameo from Charith Asalanka. Australia didn’t have a flying start as they lost their star batter David Warner (11 runs off 10 balls) in the fifth over from Maheesh Theekshana‘s very first ball.
Australia were heading forward before Mitchell Marsh (18 runs off 17 balls with a four and a six) departed on Dhananjaya de Silva’s loopy delivery in the ninth over. But the Aussies weren’t in a horrible state even when they lost their fourth wicket in the form of Glenn Maxwell in the 13th over. Maxwell smashed two fours and two maximums to score 23 runs off 12 balls.
After Maxwell’s departure, it was Marcus Stoinis’s show. Stoinis hammered 59 runs off just 18 balls with four boundaries and six maximums at a massive strike rate of 327.78. He was supported by Aussie skipper Aaron Finch who played a very slow knock of 31 runs off 42 balls. Australia won the match by seven wickets with 21 balls to spare.
Stoinis had scored his half-century off just 17 balls which is also the fastest by an Australian in T20Is after Warner’s 18-ball 50. Stoinic and Dutch player Stephan Myburg have now scored the joint-fastest half-century at the T20 World Cup. The list of the fastest half-century is topped by the legendary all-rounder Yuvraj Singh who smashed 50 in just 12 balls in the 2007 T20 World Cup match against England at Durban.
