Suryakumar Yadav, once again, proved why he is one of the finest players in T20I right now. His quick knock, combined with the top-order batters’ equal contribution, made India’s score reach a mammoth 237/3 on Sunday, October 2 at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati.
Indians were asked to bat first and openers KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma stitched a 96-run partnership for the first wicket. Rohit was the first batter to get dismissed. This happened in 9.5 over when Keshav Maharaj bowled a short one in the middle. Rohit got low to slog but didn’t connect well. It went more off the top edge to deep mid-wicket where Tristan Stubbs grabbed it. Rohit departed after a knock of 43 runs off 37 balls, which included seven fours and a six.
Rahul was the next victim of Maharaj. Maharaj bowled a flatter ball around the middle. Rahul got low to sweep but missed and got it hit on the pads. LBW appeal was made and the umpire raised his finger. Rahul took the review and UltraEdge showed no bat involved, Ball Tracking showed three red dots. Rahul walked back after a crucial knock of 57 runs off 28 balls (with five fours and four sixes) at an impressive strike rate of 203.57.
Next batters, Suryakumar Yadav and Virat Kohli once again formed a partnership. Suryakumar played a quick knock of 61 runs off just 22 balls with five fours and as many sixes at an impressive strike rate of 277.27.
But in the 19th over, Anrich Nortje bowled on a length and outside off. Kohli was the batter and he slapped the ball to the point and it went straight to Temba Bavuma. Suryakumar was running across quickly but Kohli was watching the ball. Suryakumar was stranded in the middle and Bavuma threw the ball at the bowler’s end and Surya was ran out.
Kohli remained not out on 49 runs off 28 balls with seven fours and a six while Dinesh Karthik played the cameo of 17 runs off seven balls with a four and two sixes to propel India’ score to 237/3 in their allotted 20 overs.
