Sri Lanka failed to defend their 142-run target in front of destructive English batters, which resulted in England’s qualifying for the semi-final, becoming the second team to do so in the ongoing tournament. English batters held their nerves to chase down the target in a thriller to win the match by four wickets on Saturday [November 5] at the SCG in Sydney.

After winning the toss, the Lankan batter Dasun Shanaka chose to bat first. They couldn’t make use of Pathum Nissanka’s quickfire and went to score 141/8 in their 20 overs.

England started well, as skipper Jos Buttler and Alex Hales stitched a 71-run stand for the first wicket. When Wanindu Hasaranga dismissed Buttler in the eighth over, England lost control a bit, as they kept losing wickets.

Harry Brook and Liam Livingstone added four runs each, while Moeen Ali scored one run. But Hales kept playing from the other. He did not lose his wicket till the 10th over when he became a victim of Hasaranga.

Hasaranga delivered a full and floated ball, which Hales attempted to slog sweep but looped back to the bowler. He contributed 47 runs off 30 balls with four boundaries and a six at a strike rate of 156.67.

The next highest scorer for England was Ben Stokes who took his team to the end with his unbeaten 42 runs off 36 balls (with just two fours). It was an important knock in a crucial match, given that his team kept losing wickets.

England completed the target with two balls left to win this match by four wickets. Hasaranga, Lahiru Kumara, and Dhananjaya de Silva scalped two wickets each. Australia were desperately hoping for Sri Lanka’s win, but the reality is England’s victory eliminated the defending champions.
