“Captain for SRH?” Cricket Twitter goes into a frenzy as the Sunrisers STEAL Mayank Agarwal for just over $1 million

Star Indian opener and Punjab Kings’ captain from the 2022 season, Mayank Agarwal finds a new home for the 2023 IPL season as he gets sold to the Sunrisers Hyderabad for a whopping 8.25cr. Agarwal was released by the Kings after the 2022 season. According to reports, he wasn’t happy with the Kings’ management and believed that he could land a better team for the coming seasons.

Agarwal was in the first lot of batters that went under the hammer for the 2023 season and two teams were particularly interested in him right from the word go. It was a two-way fight between the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Chennai Super Kings as both teams needed an opener. As the 8 cr. mark approached, the Super Kings went out of contention and the Kings bought Agarwal for 8.25cr.

The Indian player will also be a huge captaincy option for the Sunrisers. The team from Hyderabad released their longtime captain, Kane Williamson after the 2022 season reasoning lack of delivery from the Kiwi. As of now, there looks like no better captaincy option for them than Agarwal and it is likely that the 31-year-old will lead them. With Mayak’s addition, the Sunrisers’ batting lineup looks very solid. Agarwal is set to open with young southpaw Abhishek Sharma, followed by Rahul Tripathi, Harry Brook, Aiden Markram, and Glenn Phillips.

Cricket fans on Twitter had mixed reactions over the Sunrisers picking Agarwal early on in the auction. Many of them were very happy with the decision and called Agarwal their new ‘leader’ while some wanted the team to save money and buy a better-reputed all-rounder from the remaining purse. They also brought England’s Harry Brook for 13.25cr. which came as a shock to many given the player isn’t one of big stature.

Agarwal had a very poor 2022 season for the Kings where he scored just 196 runs at an average of 16.33. Irrespective of that, the 2020 and 2021 seasons were brilliant for him where he scored 424 and 441 runs respectively. He has scored a hundred and 12 fifties in his IPL career and has scored 2327 runs at an average of 22.59.
