Rohit Sharma was all set to return to the Indian T20I team after 14 months. He had last played in India’s semi-final in the 2022 T20I World Cup, where they lost to eventual champions England. With fans and media excited about the Indian captain’s return, his short stay has made Shubman Gill public enemy no.1.
Chasing down the score of 159, the Indian openers Sharma and Gill walked into bat. Facing the opening bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi, everyone expected explosive starts from the Indian captain. He has a good record in the IS Bindra Stadium, scoring his 3rd double-ton against Sri Lanka in 2017.
The first ball he blocked with ease but decided to go for runs in the second. He stepped out and tried diving it past Ibrahim Zadran at mid-off. Unfortunately, he stopped it but struggled to take hold of the ball, fumbling it.
Sharma called for a run and ran to the opposing end with ease, but Gill didn’t move. As the 24-year-old watched the ball, Zadran threw the ball to the batting end and ran the captain out. Rohit Sharma’s 14-month wait to score runs in the shortest format had to wait. As he left the field, he turned to his batting partner and shouted at him for not running. This was his 11th duck of his T20I career, the most for any Indian cricketer.
Shubman Gill: Public Enemy No. 1
As the mix-up sent Rohit Sharma for a duck, fans on the internet didn’t spare Shubman Gill for his reluctance to run. His Instagram account was filled with hate comments, while Twitter users criticized him for his mistake. Many said he should have listened to Sharma’s call, while others abused him.
Check out their reactions:
Shubman Gill went on to score 23 runs, but got stumped in his 12th delivery. Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube took their time to score, but Varma was dismissed for 22 after a stunning catch by Gulbadin Naib. Jitesh Sharma and Dube are now in the middle, trying to build a match-winning partnership.
