Afghanistan defeated Sri Lanka in the first match of Asia Cup 2022 on Saturday, August 22 at the Dubai International Stadium in UAE. Afghanistan got their point by winning the match by eights wickets (59 balls left).
Afghanistan bowlers were the reason behind Sri Lanka’s collapse of wickets. Pacer Fazallaq Farooqi’s three wickets with a maiden over had done the hlaf job of Afghanistan. The batters did the other half comfortably.
With Chamika Karunaratne and and Bhanuka Rajpaksa’s 31 and 38 runs, Sri Lanka were able to score 105 runs. Afghanistan responded easliy with the openers Hazratullah and Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Hazratullah scored 37 runs off 28 balls with five boundaries and a six while Gurbaz played a knock of 40 runs off 18 balls that included three fours and four sixes.
While Hazratullah remained unbeaten, Wanindu Hasaranga was able to bowl out Gurbaz. Hasaranga bowled a slower googly on the middle. The ball turned sharply and Gurbaz skipped down the track for a big shot but didn’t pick the googly at all. The ball went through and shattered the stumps.
Later Ibrahim Zadran played a knock of 15 runs off 13 balls with two fours before walking back due to run-out. But still Afghanistan reached the target in just 10.1 over.
“I was trying to make a breakthrough for my team, that was the simple plan today. With the new ball, I am trying to bowl good deliveries, but I can also bowl at the death. I am comfortable doing both,” Player of the Match Fazallaq Farooqi said.
