As India are playing their third T20I against New Zealand, the latter put on a defendable target of 161 with two half-centuries- by Devon Conway and Glenn Phillips on Tuesday (November 22) at McLean Park in Napier. India will win the series if they chase down the target because they are already leading the three-match T20I by 1-0.
In the absence of regular Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson, Tim Southee is leading the team. After winning the toss, Southee chose batting.
Despite opener Finn Allen‘s and Mark Chapman’s early departures, Conway and Phillips did not allow the bowlers to get past them till the 16th over. Mohammed Siraj gave the most-wanted breakthrough by dismissing Phillips. Siraj pitched a short ball that Phillips wanted to pull but top-edged to Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who dived to take a brilliant catch at the backward square-leg region.
But Phillips did not walk back without scoring runs. He played 33 balls to score 54 runs with five fours and three sixes at a strike rate of 163.64. After his dismissal, New Zealand lost their remaining wickets on the trot in the last overs.
In the next over, Arshdeep Singh sent Conway to the dugout. His taking pace off the ball made Conway drag it over the mid-wicket but he was early in his shot, and Ishan Kishan pouched an easy catch at the deep mid-wicket. Conway scored the most for the Kiwis with his slow 49-ball 59-run knock, studded with five fours and two sixes.
Despite a good start, the Kiwi batters couldn’t end their innings on a high note. Arshdeep and Siraj shifted the momentum back to India’s favour by tumbling Kiwi’s innings in the last five overs, with both the pacers scalping four wickets each.
