India’s all-rounder Deepti Sharma became the pick of India’s bowlers when she scalped three wickets against West Indies to restrict them to just 118/6. India are playing their second match on Wednesday (February 15) at the Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town in the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup 2023. With her three scalps, she completed her 100 wickets in the shortest format.

The best thing about Deepti’s milestone is that she became the first Indian cricketer (men or women) to take 100 T20I wickets. India Men’s leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has the most wickets (91) by a male cricketer in the shortest format. Deepti is now the leading wicket taker for India in T20I history.

Talking about the match, West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews won the toss and opted to bat first. She was the first to walk back to the pavilion after Pooja Vastrakar dismissed her for two runs in the second over. Then Stefaine Taylor and Shemaine Campbelle took care of the innings by stitching a stand before Deepti sent both the batters into packing in the 14th over.

First, she got rid of Campbelle, who had played 36 balls and scored 30 runs with the help of Smriti Mandhana’s diving catch on the third ball. And on the last ball, Deepti trapped Taylor for lbw and the batter departed after a 42-run knock from 40 balls.

Right after Deepti broke the stand, West Indies failed to recover. They started losing quick wickets, however, Chedean Nation added 21 runs from 18 balls so that her team reached 118/6 in their allotted 20 overs. Deepti, in her full quota of overs, conceded 15 runs at an economy of 3.75. It is also her 89th T20I match.

India started well while chasing with openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma stitching 32 runs. However, they lost three quick wickets in back-to-back overs.

Mandhana (10 off seven balls) became Karishman Ramharack’s prey, while Jemimah Rodrigues fell for one run after she became Hayley Matthews’ victim of caught and bowled. Shafali (28 runs off 23 balls) followed Rodrigues to the dugout in the eighth over. At the time of writing this article, India have reached 44/3 in eight overs.
