“Australia not at their best”- Twitter reacts as Aaron Finch & Marcus Stoinis save Australia from Barry McCarthy’s early shocks
Marcus Stoinis and Aaron Finch
Australia cannot effort to lose this match. But the defending champions couldn’t control the game around the powerplay when Irish bowler Barry McCarthy kept sending dangerous batters to the pavilion until Marcus Stoinis and Aaron Finch steadied the ship and revived the momentum. Tim David‘s finishing touch ensured Australia score a commanding total of 179/5 in their allotted 20 overs.
Ireland won the toss and decided to field first. Ireland pacer McCarthy drew the first blood when he dismissed Aussie opener David Warner in the third over. Warner’s poor form continues in this World Cup, as he left after a mere three runs off seven balls.
Australia lost their second wicket in the ninth over when the same bowler, McCarthy, got rid of Mitchell Marsh who looked dangerous after two sixes and two fours, scoring 28 runs off 22 balls. McCarthy’s short ball made Marsh smash it to the longer side of the ground but he top-edged it. Keeper Lorcan Tucker grabbed an easy catch.
Glenn Maxwell couldn’t deliver much with his blade when Joshua Little in the 11th over, delivered a fullish ball. It was a very wide one, making Maxwell smack it, but the outside edge made it easier for keeper Tucker to grab it.
Aaron Finch, who has so far scored the most runs for Australia (3114), played a captain’s knock with his 38-ball half-century. He and Marcus Stoinis revived the Aussies’ innings with their half-century partnership till McCarthy broke it when he dismissed the Aussie skipper.
On the 4th ball of the 17th over, Finch smacked a four off McCarthy, but the latter had the last laugh when he delivered a full toss on the next ball, which Finch tried to heave by stepping across the line; Mark Adair pouched a comfortable catch. Finch exited the field following 63 runs off 44 balls, studded with five boundaries and three maximums.
Stoinis was disappointed as he couldn’t finish the innings for his team when Little, on the fourth ball of the 19th over, threw the ball on a length, and Stoinis opened his front leg to smack but outside-edged it, and George Dockrell there wouldn’t want to miss the sharp catch. Stoinis played a quick knock of 35 runs off 25 balls with three fours and a six.
Tim David and Matthew Wade gave their finishing touches to steer the score to 179/5 in their allotted 20 overs. McCarthy bagged three wickets, while Little could scalp one wicket.
