Robin Uthappa, one of the 2007 World Cup (T20) winning heroes, announced his decision to retire from all forms of “Indian cricket”. Now that he has retired and got clearance from the Board of Control for Cricket in India, he can play in overseas leagues.
He took to social media on Wednesday and shared a long post. His caption on the post read:
“It has been my greatest honour to represent my country and my state, Karnataka. However, all good things must come to an end, and with a grateful heart, I have decided to retire from all forms of Indian cricket. Thank you all.”
“It’s been 20 years since I started playing professional cricket, and it has been the greatest honour to represent my country and state, Karnataka- wonderful journey of ups and downs; one that has been fulfilling, rewarding, enjoyable and has allowed me to grow as a human being,” he wrote in his post.
“However, all good things must come to an end, and with a grateful heart I have decided to retire from all forms of Indian cricket. While I will spend a significant time with my young family, I look forward to charting a new phase in my life,” he added. Uthappa is known for his aggressive batting which gave him the chances to be part of the Men in Blue. In 2006, he made his international debut against England in an ODI in Guwahati. He mustered up 934 runs in 46 ODIs with 86 being his highest score. In T20Is, he amassed a total of 248 runs in 13 matches at a strike rate of 118.01.
In the Indian Premier League, he has represented six teams and has been part of two winning teams- Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014 and Chennai Super Kings in 2021.
He was one of the bowlers who had hit the stumps during the memorable bowl out against Pakistan in the inaugural edition of ICC T20 World Cup in 2007 in South Africa.
