After white-washing West Indies in the ODIs, India is playing the first match of the five-match T20I series against them on Friday, July 29 at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad. Men in Blue set a huge target of 191 in their alloted 20 overs with the brilliant knocks from skipper Rohit Sharma and finisher Dinesh Karthik and it will be interesting to see how the power-packed West Indies will respond to it.
After being asked to bat first, Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav walked out to start the innings. After a 44-run stand between the two, Yadav’ brisk innings came to an end. He fell after his 24 runs off 16 balls off Akeal Hosein’s delivery.
Shreyas Iyer played four balls and soon got dismissed on duck. Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya scored 14 and 1 respectively while Ravindra Jadeja scored 16 runs off 13 balls with two fours.
Rohit played till the last ball of the 15th over when a short length slower ball from Jason Holder dismissed him. He scored 64 runs off 44 balls with seven fours and two sixes. Rohit stood tall to play Holder’s delivery and smashed it hard towards long off but didn’t get the desired distance. Shimron Hetmyer dived brilliantly to catch the ball and dismissed Rohit.
Dinesh Karthik then did his cameo role. He played 19 balls to score an unbeaten 44 runs with four boundaries and two sixes at an impressive strike rate of 215.79. He was supported by Ravichandran Ashwin who scored 13 runs off 10 balls. At the end, India’s score reached a challenging 190/6.
In the match, Rohit Sharma also reached two milestone. He surpassed Martin Guptill to reach the top spot of being the highest run-scorer in T20Is. He then scored his 31st half-century and crossed Virat Kohli’s record of most fifty-plus score in T2OIs.
