Sam Northeast, who plays for Galmorgan in the first-class Test cricket, became the first batter after the Brian Lara to go past the 400-run mark in a single innings. He became the ninth batter overall to go past 400-run mark in first-class cricket. This happened against Leicestershire on July 23.

Northeast came when his side were at 9/2 in 6.1 overs. He stitched a 306-run stand with South Africa’s Colin Ingram. Ingram played a 139-run knock. After Ingram’s wicket, Glamorgan lost two more wickets quickly before wicketkeeper-batter Chris Cooke joined Northeast. Cook scored an unbeaten 191 but couldn’t complete the innings as Glamorgan captain David Lloyd declared the innings. Northeast scored 410 off 450 balls with 45 fours and three sixes. Glamorgan declared the innings on 795/5d.

795/5d is also the highest score in County history. Northeast also became the first batter for Glamorgan to reach a 400-run mark.

Lara had scored an unbeaten 400 runs against England in 2004 in Antigua. This helped West Indies set 751/5 in the first innings which England failed to score and this enforced a follow-on on them as they were all bowled out 285. The match though ended in a draw.

“191 was my highest in everything. I had a lot more nerves in the 190s than in the 390s which sounds completely ridiculous to even talk about it now. I really wanted that double. That was something I wanted ticked off the list in my career and in some ways, I thought that was never going to happen,” Northeast told ESPNCricinfo.

“It’s not something you think about all the time, is it? ‘I want to get a double hundred this week’. You just think, ‘let’s rebuild again and keep going’. You’ve never got enough, as all my coaches over the years have told me. I guess it was kind of true,” he added.
