“Do not judge them on their T20 form!”- Twitter reacts as Tom Latham, Kane Williamson boss an epic run-chase against India
Kane Williamson and Tom Latham
New Zealand displayed a perfect run-chase of a massive 307-run target as Indian bowlers couldn’t break the partnership of Tom Latham and Kane Williamson. The Kiwi duo’s 200-plus run-stand helped the team to a seven wicket win on Friday (November 25) at the Eden Park stadium in Auckland.
Chasing the huge 307-run target, the Kiwis did not have a flying start as their openers- Finn Allen and Devon Conway – could stich just 35-run stand between them. Allen scored 22 runs off 25 balls with two fours and a six before Shardul Thakur scalped his wicket to give India their first breakthrough. Allen tried to push the length ball but a faint edge saw him giving a catch to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant.
Conway lost his wicket in the 16th over off Umran Malik. Malik, who was playing his first ODI, scalped his first wicket when Conway gave away a catch to Pant off an outside-edge. Conway played a slow knock of 24 runs off 42 balls with three fours.
Then skipper Williamson and wicket-keeper Tom Latham steadied the ship with both completing their half-centuries and stitching a 200-plus run-stand. Williamson scored his ninth 50-run knock against India from 26 innings in the ODI format. But he fell short of just six runs to complete his ton as he scored an unbeaten 94 runs off 98 balls with seven fours and a six.
Latham slammed a fast ton off just 76 balls and went on to score an unbeaten 145 runs off just 104 balls with 19 boundaries and five maximums. It was also his seventh ODI century.
New Zealand did not lose wickets after that. The unbeaten knocks by Williamson and Latham, drove the Kiwis to chase down the target in just 48th over and they won the match by seven wickets. The Black Caps are now leading the three-match ODI series by 1-0.
Earlier, India had a solid start with three batters- Shikhar Dhawan, Shubman Gill, and Shreyas Iyer- completing their half-centuries. But Washington Sundar’s cameo in the last overs took India’s total to 306/7 in 50 overs. Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson scalped three wickets each, while Adam Milne picked one.
